MAKING THE DREAM A REALITY
In 1995, young people in St. John´s Summer School surveyed the North Mission and determined that there were no parks in the neighborhood. They decided to advocate for a safe, green place for children to play, families to enjoy a picnic, and neighbors to create a community garden.
After many years of writing letters, speaking publicly and working with public agencies, City and State funding has been used to purchase a lot on the east side of Hoff Street, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department recently presented a design concept. In the current Community Planning Phase, residents, youth and community members are giving input into the design and planning of the park, including development of a Neighborhood Watch to promote safety and security as well as the installation of public art works. We expect the neighborhood park to be inaugurated by the end of 2004!
