URBAN ARTWORKS
In this community art program, high school youth learn leadership
skills as they work together to plan and implement art projects that celebrate
youth voices and youth visions while including neighborhood youth and
community residents in their creation. Participants receive professional
training in the use of materials, tools and design fundamentals and work
with local artists to incorporate new skills into their work. Urban ArtWORKS
artists have created 8 public art installations in the Mission District:
• San Francisco Sidewalk Project
• The Future is in Your Hands,
• Youth Voices project at the 16th Street BART station
• Pollo Supremo ceramic mosaic tile commission
• Mission Cultural History Panels
• San Francisco Living Mural
• Multi-Generational Mural at
Marshall Elementary
• Altamont Hotel Tree
Planters
Through their community projects youth artists have an
opportunity to be leaders and role models for their peers dispel youth
stereotypes and engender a community that is more youth friendly and aware
of youth issues. Former program youth artist Luis Salazar Hernandez currently
leads Urban ArtWORKS.
